Q: what does a Transmission sensor do in a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT?
my 1997 Ford Explorer XLT will not go move backwords. It will go frontward, but when put into reverse it just will not move. Someone said it might be my range sensor. What is that and what is its function?

A: They sense temperture, gear shift selection, and shift points for automatic trans.
Suggest you park facing forward until you see a mechanic.

Q: How do I replace master control switch on 1997 Ford Explorer?
I have a direct short somwhere on my ‘97 Ford Explorer. It keeps blowing the fuse that controls my dome light, map lights, visor lamps, etc. My real problem is that my power windows won’t roll down. All four are stuck in the up position. I’m thinking it might be the master control switch that is causing the whole problem. Maybe, I’m wrong. I need to know how to replace the master control switch ( if that’s even the problem).

A: bypass the master power window switch and see if the windows work-but make sure there is power to the master first-rest of your problems you will just have to start tracing wires til you find the problem=get a wiring diagram and go from there=a good source that i have had and i think it cost me 10 bucks is on the net and i think it is called automotive hobbiest

Q: What is the best why to run a power wire for an amp in a 99 ford explorer?
I need help figuring out the best way to run a wire from my battery to my amp in my 1999 ford explorer. Does the power wire have to be plugged directly into the battery or will any hot wire work? As you can tell this is the first time i have done this.

A: it’s in your best interest to hook it directly to the battery. due to the high current draw from most amplifiers, they will need a larger wire than a factory hard wire can provide.
the larger wire is important for both clean sound, and hopefully in avoiding catching your car on fire.

Q: Why is there a humming noise coming from our Ford Explorer?
There is a humming noise from a 2003 Ford Explorer. It’s loudness depends on the speed at which your driving. We do not know if it coming from the wheels or the engine. What is the source of it?

A: Time to trade that guzzler in. Have until Labor Day.

Q: How much would it cost to paint a 1998 Ford Explorer black?
Well I was thinking of buying and painting a lightish green 1998 ford explorer black because it looks terrible but I was wondering how much it would cost me here in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

A: While I’ve never actually repainted a car, I was thinking about it awhile back and the price really seems to depend on where you go and what quality you want from my research.

For example, I seem to remember that a “cheap” place like Maaco (in the states, not sure of an Australia equiv) could cost as little as 200-300 or so USD. Their quality may not be that great though as I read quite a few people saying they did a terrible job, it faded quickly, it peeled off, etc… A higher quality shop though can easily run 500, 1,000, (again in USD) or more.

I don’t know if it’d be a 1:1 conversion for price, however the moral of the story (if you will) is that repainting a car isn’t cheap. For a car the size of a ford explorer, I would certainly error on the high side of things though. Most of what you pay for is taking apart and putting the car back together, and on a car like that it isn’t a “quick” process.

Q: where is the filler cap for the rear windshield washer on a 2007 Ford Explorer?
I’ve looked everywhere in the back and under the hood and can NOT find where to put the windshield washer fluid for the rear window on a 2007 Ford Explorer! Help!

A: Both front and rear washers draw water from the the mahoosive tank at the front. The one thing is is that the rear washer pump tends to placed higher than the front and so runs out of water first.

Q: What do you think about your Ford Explorer?
We’re thinking about buying a 2002 Ford Explorer (V6) and we’re wondering if it’s a good vehicle. Are they dependable? What’s the gas mileage? Things like that.

We’ve read about them online and in Consumer Reports. We would like to hear from personal experience. Thanks!

A: i have had 3 explorers and currently own an ‘03 and ‘05… run great, very safe…. yes some people have problems with them but i drive mine pretty hard and one reached 200k+ miles while the others are still under 100k with few, minor, expected repairs… it has been the best selling suvs in america many years so let millions of drivers be your source

Q: I have a 98 Ford Explorer and the radio display light won’t work!! How do I fix it?
I bought a 98 Ford Explorer and the radio display light won’t work. I read on some websites that many 98 and 99 explorer’s display lights don’t work. Do I have to spend alot of money to get it fixed?

A: Check the fuse for your dash lights, the radio is on the same circuit. If it is not the fuse i suggest trying to get one at a local reputable salvage yard. Also you could try LKQ corporation, They have locations all over the united states and they guarantee all of thier parts

Q: Ford Explorer?
Im having car troubles. When I go to drive my 1996 ford explorer it makes a loud humming noise and wont go above 30 mph.If i keep presiing on the gas it goes up tp 3-4 rpms.If I let my foot off the gas a couple times it will go into 3rd gear and I can stay between 35-45 miles and the car seems fine.Ive been told by a mechanic that its my transmission. He says I only have 1st and third gear.It skips 2nd and wont even go up to 4th.He says he emptied transmission fluid and it was burnt. So I go to trade my car in (at a small dealership),didnt like anything they had so their mechanic tells me he will put a used tramsmission in for $600 including labor. So he calls me the next day and was like Hey,I would like to test drive your car to see if I can save you more money. He explained to me that he thought it could be,and sounded to him that it may just be my filter and cylonoids needed to be replaced and that he could do that for about $300 and save me the cost of putting in a transmission
So now Im confused.I dont know what to believe and dont want to be ripped off.The first guy hooked my car up to a computer and got 4 different codes,2 had to do with the transmission and 2 with the oxygen sensors. The 2nd guy tells me he doesnt think the first guy checked things out as much as what he could have.Does it sound like a transmission or is it possible it could be as simple as the cylonoids being replaced? Either wayIm going to sell it.So I would also like to know what you all think I should ask for it considering it may need a transmission
1996 ford explorer 4wd V6
180,000 miles
body is in good condition.
has had new fuel pump and power steering line put in about a year ago.

A: Sounds like the transmission is gone. The oxygen sensors would impact your gas mileage not much of anything else.

Q: Ford Explorer?
I have a 98′ Explorer Sport and my tire is flat on the drivers rear. I know how to change a tire, but I do not know where to place the jack on the explorer at all. Can someone please helpp!!!!!!!!
Factory jack

A: If you’re using the factory jack, look for a hole in the framerail. The framerail is the long straight metal “tube” looking thing that runs from the rear to the front of the truck, on both sides. Usually about 3 or 4 inches wide.

If you’re using a floor jack (like they use in garages), put it under the differential in the rear (looks like a pumpkin, directly between both rear wheels).

Either way, make sure the front wheels are blocked so it don’t roll off on you. IF YOU ARE AT ALL UNSURE, DON’T ATTEMPT IT!! You could seriously damage something, or worse, yourself, if you put the jack in the wrong spot.

I have to replace one of my shocks on my 98 explorer XLT ( front driver side), should i just replace all of them. Cuz i might want to go off roading a little with my friend but there’s no need for a lift or complete aftermarket suspension change but i was just wondering.

A: Change all, other wise your handling will be up to sh&%.

Thumbs down, it’s a crappy SUV.

The Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota 4runner are much, much more reliable, have much higher resale and are a much better value.
